AI in Photography: An Extension of Human Creativity

AI in Photography: An Extension of Human Creativity

Travis Garski |

No, this article is not written by Chat-GPT, even though we certainly do use it to make some of our content. But that's the point. AI should be used as a tool to help us create more. Just because an article is written with an AI tool does not make that content any less creative. It takes time to adequately prompt AI so it understands what you truly want as your end result.

This goes for the photography and videography world as well. My brother and I at Impulse use AI every single day in our line of work.

For wedding photography, we use AI to help cull through our thousands of photos. As most wedding photographers know, you'll take 15 different shots of a group photo because you can never really know if someone didn’t look at the camera, blinked, or ended up sneezing. With a tool like Narrative Select, AI will scan all of your photos and will rate them on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the crispiest, most in-focus shots, and 1 being shots that look like you used a cataract filter.

It also provides you a grid showing each person's face in the shot. This allows you to see the details of the faces close up, plus the software gives you an icon showing if the person is smiling and how open their eyes are.

See face details faster

Using Narrative Select, I am able to cut down my culling time to less than 1 hour for an 8-hour wedding shoot. I know that extra time back is something every career photographer would appreciate.

If you end up getting shots that you really like, but they look out of focus or grainy with noise, I'll put you on another AI tool I use often. Topaz Labs makes a suite of AI tools for photography and videography that allow you to upres, sharpen, and perform noise reduction without making the photo or video you took look like it was touched up with AI. With this tool, subtlety is backed into the code.

There have been times where I had a slightly out-of-focus shot, but I loved everything else about it, and I wished I could bring it back. Using Topaz Labs' upressing and sharpen tool, I'm able to increase the resolution of the image and bring back the details of a subject.

Here's proof that Topaz Sharpen AI can sharpen out-of-focus images

The noise reduction tool in the software is incredible as well. I am no longer afraid to increase my ISO by a few stops because I know Topaz's noise reduction will make the image look crisp and sharp.

Another powerful way to stretch your creative boundaries in photography and videography is through the use of AI in Photoshop. AI tools can enhance your images by adding elements that make the photo more compelling or removing unwanted distractions that were unavoidable in the background of your shot.

For example, you might have taken a perfect portrait, but there's an unsightly object or person in the background that you couldn't avoid. AI-powered tools in Photoshop can seamlessly remove these distractions, allowing the true focus of your photo to shine without compromise. On the flip side, if you feel a scene is missing something, AI can help you add elements that enhance the story you're trying to tell. Whether it's adding a dramatic sky to a landscape or inserting subtle details that bring your vision to life, these tools offer endless possibilities.

Using AI in Photoshop isn't about taking shortcuts or cheating; it's about expanding your creative toolkit. By integrating AI into your workflow, you can overcome limitations and bring your imaginative ideas to fruition in ways that were previously challenging or impossible. AI is not a replacement for your creativity but a powerful ally in achieving your artistic goals. So, next time you’re editing, let AI help you unlock new dimensions in your photography, making every shot as perfect as you envision it.

AI is transforming the creative landscape for photographers and videographers, offering tools that enhance efficiency, creativity, and quality. At Impulse, my brother and I embrace these innovations to elevate our work, whether it's through culling photos, enhancing image resolution, or refining shots in Photoshop. AI empowers us to focus more on our artistic vision and less on the tedious tasks that can bog down the creative process. As technology continues to evolve, we look forward to discovering even more ways AI can help us push the boundaries of our craft, making each project not just easier, but more extraordinary. So, don't shy away from these tools; instead, use them to amplify your creativity and bring your unique vision to life.
